Born June 22, 1963 in Columbia, MS to Mr. Ned and Dorothy Newsom, Dr. Newsom was the first of eight siblings. He attended the Columbia Public School System for grades 1-7 and the Marion County School System for grades 8-12. He graduated in 1981 from East Marion High School in the top 10 of his class. On June 27, 1982 he preached his first sermon at Friendship M.B. Church of Columbia, MS under the leadership of Dr. L.Z. Blankinship, Sr. In August 1982, he started night classes at Mississippi Baptist Seminary of Jackson, MS. He later transfered to Harper Baptist Seminary of Magnolia, MS where he graduated in 1990 receiving a Bachelor of Theology. He went on to continue his studies at Harper Baptist Seminary. In 1993, he graduated receiving his Masters of Theology. In 1998 Harper Baptist Seminary bestowed upon him the Honorary Doctorate of Divinity. In 1989, He was led to Harmony M.B. Church, where he was chosen to be their pastor. He remained the under sheperd of their flock until July 1992. In November1992, he was led to John the Baptist M.B. Church where he was chosen to be pastor. This was his second church as its' leader. He is presently serving as the under shepherd of this flock. Dr. Newsom is a County Supervisor for Marion County, MS. The people of Marion County have trusted him to lead in this capacity for several terms. He is also an instructor at Harper Baptist Seminary Satellite Extension located in Columbia, MS. He is a family man who loves God, family, hunting, fishing, and football. He played football (linebacker and running back) at East Marion High School under the legendary Mississippi Hall of Fame Coach, Leslie Peters. He is married to the former Ms. Elaine Anderson. He has five children: Christian, Yolanda, Shanda, Calvin Jr. and John. |
